OPI investigators accepted an invitation to investigate and possibly debunk a long standing rumor about a
local cemetery and its alleged haunted activity.
The Ghost Lights of Tigard- It has been stated on many different paranormal sites that the Canterburry
Cemetery is a place of paranormal activity. The stories go that ghostly lights, apparitions have been
sighted from the highway below by passing motorists and that strange lights are seen, usually small
greenish balls that move about in the trees. According to claims, small greenish balls don't seem to get
close to people but stay in the distance. It is also claimed that nearby residents of apartments and house
in the area have heard unearthly howls and screams from the direction of the cemetery and have felt a
large malevolent presence that comes and goes from there.
Facts, observations and experiences : This historic cemetery is located atop Canterburry hill in Tigard
suburban area. Newer homes and apartments have been developing around the cemetery since the 1970's.
The cemetery is nestled in between apartments which are a short distance to the east and what appears to
be a single residential house to the immediate west. The cemetery is located atop a hill with limited
visibility from the road below with the apartments having the best possible view during day light hours.
The cemetery itself is somewhat heavily treed. During the night hours it would be almost impossible to
see greenish balls of light from the road or apartments. Unless people are located directly in this small
cemetery, and we do mean small cemetery,(around 50 grave sites), the greenish balls of light would have
no were to go or keep distance from.
OPI heard human voices that carried directly from the nearby apartments mixed with heavy traffic noise,
and car lights from a main roadway. Audio and video equipment were used at this location but nothing
abnormal was caught on either. It is our belief based upon observations of this location and the
surrounding circumstances that the reported lights and noises are not paranormal in nature.
